Express Life Like Art

NOOK is a space like a toy box filled with things you love.

It’s like that secret spot you created in a small corner when you were a child.

What’s expressed there is truly art.

The collection is born from the fusion of Japanese culture × foreign cultures.

Through cool creations born from cultural collaboration, NOOK delivers the value of expressing life as art.

Let’s express this life like art.

Story

I Wanted to Transform My Worldview

That desire led me to start a life in a foreign land.

After meeting my partner, I left behind my career as a high school teacher of nearly 10 years and stepped onto the soil of Kenya, Africa—just an ordinary foreigner with no title.

What I experienced there was beyond imagination.

Everything I could see, hear, touch, and feel with my senses was shocking, and my worldview kept expanding.

It was like how, as a child, your sensibilities are sharpened through countless experiences.

Encountering unfamiliar cultures introduced me to new values and perspectives, and it also deepened my understanding of the culture of the country where I was born and raised.

More than that, I came to truly realize how privileged the environment I grew up in Japan had been.

“Having an environment where you can take on challenges”

That is never something to be taken for granted—I felt that deep in my heart.

Life in a foreign land sometimes brings social isolation.

But that solitude also taught me what I love, what my culture truly is, and what I want to pursue.

“Foreign culture × My culture”

Now that my life has become one of moving from country to country, I’ve arrived at the idea of creating works inspired by the places I’ve stayed.

As if expressing this life like art.

Partnership

Not Charity, but an Equal Relationship Built on Shared Passions

I want a relationship that’s not about giving support, but about connecting through what we both love.

Living in Kenya gave me an immeasurable amount of energy from its people and culture.

One of those sources of inspiration is my love for fashion.

Having clothes tailored from fabrics and designs you love—creating a one-of-a-kind piece in the world. Wearing it feels nothing short of amazing.

But I also witnessed social issues that could threaten this culture. One major challenge is the influx of secondhand clothes from developed countries. These clothes are sold cheaper than custom-made garments, reducing demand for tailors’ work and ultimately taking away precious opportunities for job creation.

NOOK’s First Collection is handcrafted piece by piece in a small workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. Our partners there are cheerful, kind, and highly skilled tailors who pour their hearts into every creation. The workshop also focuses on mentoring young aspiring tailors, teaching them how to build a life around what they love.

By owning one of our “one-of-a-kind pieces”, you’re not only connecting through a shared love of fashion—you’re also helping to preserve and celebrate their culture

  • Pursue creativity to generate new value
  • Foster connections with different cultures
  • Create gateways for communication
  • Spark interest in responsible production and consumption
  • Promote understanding and solutions for social issues
